WAKC offers presentation on historical Kern River

In an effort to provide this interesting information to service clubs and civic groups about the history of the people and times of the late 1800's and the settling of this area, the Association is making this program available as a public service through the educational promotion outreach.

122 years ago a battle raged over who owned the waters of the Kern River. Some claimed the water of the Kern through the old English law of riparian right, while others claimed the water under the appropriative rights because the water would be used for a greater common good. The battle had raged in and out of court for more than 9 years. Finally on July 22, 1888, cattle baron Henry Miller, devised a plan that would divide the water between the parties. That agreement is still in effect today and regulates the water supply from the Kern River to agriculture and urban uses.

The program consists of an approximately 14 minute video presentation plus about ten minutes for questions. Anyone requesting the program should call the Water Association at (661) 397-7426 or (661) 319-6405. There is no charge for the presentation, but those wishing to order a copy of the DVD may do so for a nominal cost of $20.00.
